Hi and welcome to The Tortoise Diet Blog! I'm Dr Frankie Miller, author of The Tortoise Diet.

As you probably know, my new book, The Tortoise Diet, is hitting bookstores in October. I can't wait!

It's certainly changed my life! I was a stressed-out, overweight marine biologist before I discovered this secret. I had trouble finding a wetsuit that would fit me!     Hi Dr Miller, I saw you on Good Morning Ohio the other week and I loved what you had to say about salads! Like you said, they should be like eating the Garden of Eden, not some limp lettuce and a lonely tomato! I have been getting fresh wildflowers from my local market and adding them to my salads and they are so bright and colorful and tasty!

    I'm so looking forward to seeing your book in the stores next month!

    Hi Dr M, I saw you on the show too. I liked your idea of adding flowers to salads but you talked about things like hibiscuses and orchids that are hard to find in my area. Can you eat any old flowers?

    Hi anonymous and welcome to The Tortoise Diet.

    It's not just tropical flowers you can eat. Tortoises live in all climates from tropical to desert to alpine to sub-arctic! My book has a list of the types of flowers that tortoises love to eat in each climate. Flowers like dandelions are great for example and easy to find most places.

    Hi Jason, welcome from "down under"! : ) We will be launching the book there too in the next few months and I would love to return to the Barrier Reef where I've conducted a lot of research into marine turtles.

    Thankyou for your question, it's a very good one. (I might have to add it to my FAQs!). And you've hit one of the unique features of The Tortoise Diet - it doesn't require a lot of exercise! Like you say, tortoises don't get much exercise!

    Now let me just say this: The Tortoise Diet will provide all the nutrients and energy most people need for a reasonably active life. But if you are a sporting person - and I bet you are Jason, down there in "Oz" with your beaches and your wonderful weather! - then you will need to adapt the diet to your energy requirements.

    I talk about that in a chapter of my book "The Hare in the Tortoise".

    Thanks for your comments Darlene. The Caveman Diet and its variants bear some similarities to The Tortoise Diet in the they are all attempts to recreate a 'natural diet' of sorts. Their content is quite different of course, but both do stress naturally gathered sorts of ingredients.

    You know...I hate to break it to you, but tortoises process their food via hindgut fermentation. This allows them to use special bacteria to break down fibrous plants over a long period of time in order to extract nutrients from them.

    What's more, tortoises are true herbivores--they have evolved to eat grasses and other plants exclusively. This is something that humans really can't do. We cannot ferment grasses in our gut--we do not chew our cud, nor do we have multiple stomachs, or a super-long intestinal tract. We don't eat our food twice like a rabbit.

    Tortoises are also reptiles...they have an extraordinarily slow metabolism when compared with that of a mammal or bird. They require far fewer calories to keep them going.

    Eating plenty of vegetables is great for your health, don't get me wrong...but trying to eat like a tortoise--for real--would simply kill you. Probably after a long, slow decline into deficiency diseases. There are nutrients that simply cannot be acquired from plants. We are OMNIVORES. Our warm-blooded metabolism and protein-hungry giant brain require a diet significantly different from that of a tortoise. A tortoise fed OUR proper diet would develop pyramiding of the scutes in the long term. A human fed what a tortoise eats will suffer a serious decline in mental function, and muscle wasting, in the long term.

    The solution to being healthy and losing weight is not to eat like an herbivore--it's to stop eating so darned MUCH, and eat healthy, whole foods--yes, plenty of nice vegetables (the wilder the better), but also healthy grass-fed meats, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds, and select whole grains. Things that tortoises do not eat, and do not need--but that we do.

    I dare say, eating the tortoise would probably be healthier than eating tortoise food.
    Flowers are not high in nutritional content, which is why tortoise keepers feed them as a treat, not a staple. Tortoises eat plants that would kill humans dead, such as hen-and-chicks.

    It was a great idea, but it doesn't bear up under scrutiny. What's wrong with the bowhead whale diet, then? They live for hundreds of years too. They eat krill and copepods, and other small invertebrates--mostly animal matter. It keeps them healthy.
